Starting A Home Repair Business
68Are you the first person that is called when something is broken? Do you love playing with power tools? Is most of the stuff in your home built or modified by yourself? Well, if your answer was yes to the above questions then you are definitively handyman material. This may be an opportunity for yourself to start your own handyman business and earn yourself some money for what you are already doing!
In this article, aspects that should be considered before going into a home repair business are discussed. Please feel free to use this article as a basic guide to give you ideas. Note that some local government laws or requirements may apply to your situation and therefore these will need to be cleared up by visiting or calling your local government.
Decide If There Is Business Around
The first and most important factor to consider is if there will be any work once you have started. You will not have a successful home repair service if there are no homes to be repaired, simple! Unfortunately, if you live out back and beyond then you are not going to get many calls. On the other hand, if you live in a dense neighbourhood especially with older houses and developments then you, potentially, could be a very busy handyman. Another trick is to check the phone book and see if you can find any handymen or handywomen already operating in your area. If there are already some, then perhaps this business is flourishing in the area.
Find What You Are Good At
The next most important factor is to find out exactly what home repair aspects you are good at. Lets face it, no one can be good at everything. If you are expecting to walk straight into the business and be able to do every kind of job then you could land yourself into trouble. For the beginning stages, it is best to concentrate on jobs that you are experienced at. Look at what you already do around the house and what you are already qualified in and promote yourself to do these jobs for people. Perhaps later, when you are established and feel ready to take on other jobs, it is a good idea to train yourself in other aspects.
Seek Help From Local Government
I have included this aspect because it is a requirement that yourself and your business are operating in line with the law. Certain jobs will require licences to do the work and will have laws which must be followed. In addition, your business in general will have laws to follow as well such as tax requirements, registrations and so on. All this can seem overwhelming and is often what turns people away from starting a business themself. However, a visit to your government’s website or a call to their office should clear things up or at least give you a number to contact to help you further.
Training Courses
This factor is closely related to the above two and therefore has been touched, however it is still a critical factor on its own. Training courses are not only important to obtain licenses but are also good to broaden your knowledge. Not only can you learn more about the specific trades you would like to perform but you can gain knowledge in areas such as running a business and using a computer. In addition, training courses will attract people who are in the same boat as you. This can be very useful when you feel like you would like to have business contacts and network with others to find out what they are doing. Training courses are usually run through the local government or through educational institutions such as universities. Try looking through the local paper, on the web or searching through community notice boards for specific courses.
Contacting Others
A great aspect about this business that you can use to your advantage is that a home repair service will advertise their number in a phone book. Now, I bet you are asking yourself how this will help you? Well this is because you have a free source of additional contacts that you can ring for advice. Ask questions like how busy the work is, what training courses they have taken and where they suggest to go for the first step. Note that some might not want to give you advice, and respect that because setting up the business was hard work for them as well, but if you call enough people you should get some bites. As an extra tip, try calling at times just after work has finished, (for example approximately 6.00 pm) because workers will most probably not be busy working and you will not be cutting too heavily into their personal time.
