How to pick a Gents Watch

Men can be particularly hard to buy for: most of the time they are content with what they have and they hardly ever leave clues as to what they really want. However, if you want to leave a lasting impression, a men’s watch will certainly do the trick. A well selected gents watch will look remarkable and always be needed.

This article examines the various features of watches and aims to explain aspects of these features. Overall, this should be used as a general guide that aims to help you pick the perfect gents watch.

Digital or Analogue

To avoid any confusion, the difference between the two is that analogue watches use hour, minute and second hands to show the time compared to digital watches which will show the time in numbers on a panel. In some cases, watches will come with both an analogue time display and digital displays for other information. Described below are the two types of watch displays to compare and contrast the different types of watches.

Digital Watches

Digital watches generally have additional advanced features such as a backlight, calendar, stop watch, battery life indicator or even heart rate monitors which are displayed on an LCD (liquid crystal display) screen. The advanced features will vary for each make of watch but they will be listed in it’s specifications. Some people prefer digital watches due to the fact that these features will generally allow them to do more than analogue watches.

Analogue Watches

In other cases people prefer a simple, classic style because it shows class and sophistication. Analogue watches fit this category: they are lasting, classic timepieces used more for dressy occasions rather than sport timekeeping! In addition, they can have complementary features such as a backlight or date and even some nautical devices.

Watch material

When choosing the perfect watch, it’s appearance is a major factor. For a gents watch, the band and face frame are major contributors to it’s overall look. Various materials; Gold, Plastic, Steel, have been examined below.

Gold Watches

If you are looking for a dress watch, gold watches are exceptionally dressy and sophisticated but can be extremely expensive at the same time. However, they will certainly make a sentimental gift that will leave a lasting impression.

Plastic or Rubber Watches

Plastic watches can seem cheap however, 99% of the time, this is a misconception! Sport watches commonly have a plastic frame and rubber band because it is durable and looks hi-tech. Therefore, if you know the recipient is going to use his watch primarily for sport, a plastic framed watch would be the ideal choice.

Stainless Steel Watches

For an all-round watch, stainless steel watches are a great choice and can be worn with a suit, while exercising or just with casual attire down at the park. In addition, stainless steel watches are durable, look great and are very affordable with prices ranging from around $50 to about $350 for a very good watch with many features.

Personalisation of Watches

Gents watches, as discussed above, make excellent gifts because they are sentimental and look great and as an added bonus they can be personalised as well. The most common type of personalisation is engraving the back of the watch with a small message. This message can say: “happy birthday”, the recipient’s name or even “love from your name”. Note however, that only watches with a metal back can be engraved. Another form of personalisation is if the recipient has a specific interest, a sporting team for example, it is possible to find watches with the logo or theme printed on the face.

Other Important aspects

When searching for the perfect gents watch there are a few minor considerations to take into account. Firstly, check to see if it is waterproof. This will ensure that if it comes into contact with water it won’t break and cost additional amounts of money to fix. Be sure to pick the right face size for the gentleman. Small faces, and in some cases normal sized faces, can look like ladies watches on large men, however,  a face that is ridiculously large for the man’s arm looks unfitted and unprofessional. Rule of thumb: a watch face that covers approximately two-thirds to three-quarters of the man’s wrist is ideal.
